Schools That Have Made Offers

For the protection of job applicants and to maintain the integrity of our profession,
make sure hiring is done in accordance with the MLA's guidelines, especially section VI
about what exactly constitutes a good faith offer and how much time job candidates should be
afforded to accept or decline offers.

Has anyone heard from Fordham University after the MLA? (Fordham conducted some on-campus interviews in early March. According to committee members, no candidate has been hired, as of April 24th.)

Has anyone heard from UBC Vancouver about either the tenure-track or the two-year position? (Not a word! But I would like to find out what is going on there!) (Other wikis, English for example, mention something about a hiring freeze at UBC. Truth? Rumor? Is this what is holding up the posted positions? Any info?) (see update "Schools That Have Invited Candidates to Campus")

Stanford Humanities Fellowship: rejection received; semifinalists contacted

Does anyone happen to know anything about the VCU position in Europe and Film? (Yes, they didn't want me.)

Has anyone heard from Michigan State? Phone interviews were three weeks ago. Have they scheduled on-campus interviews? Rejection email 3/19 saying they filled the position.

Does anyone know what's up with Ithaca C? It says above that they notified for phone interviews on April 9th, but they've just reposted the job opening on the Chronicle website. Is this an error?
Must be. They conducted on-campus interviews this week and will make a decision in about a week.
Q: Could it be that there is a 2nd opening? Or that the 1st search was not successful? I applied in response to the Chronicle add and got a receipt of my appl. today (May 9th), the letter was written on May 3rd. In the letter, they asked for transcripts and letters of recommendation in case that they have not already been sent. Does not make sense if the search had been brought to an end.
A: A second opening is very unlikely. I'm only speculating here but given that the on-campus candidates haven't heard back anything, the search can't be failed/completed yet but is strictly speaking still open, since the position was advertised as "open until filled" - hence the letter?
A2: The position has now been filled.

Schools with Inside Candidates; Other Rumors

*Alma C has an inside candidate.
*University of Rochester has two inside candidates.
*Tulane might have an inside candidate.
*Colorado and Ohio State ran t-t searches last year (Ohio State hired at last minute for a one year position instead). failed searches?
*Washington and Lee has an inside candidate
*Webster probably has an inside candidate. (Obviously!)

Schools That Have Acknowledged Complete Applications; and RUMORS
Bucknell U
Cal Poly State
Catholic U of America * might have an inside candidate
Central Michigan * might have an inside candidate (would you please specify what lead you to this idea?? nothing oin the website suggests that)
Colby C; Colby does have an inside candidate.(Could you specify? Colby requires Ph.D.
None of their visiting people has a Ph.D.
) (perhaps the one person abd has now finshed.
At any rate, the ad's preferences very closely match what one visitor does)
Colgate U
College of Charleston
CONVERSE on Jan. 19 when they have already scheduled on-campus interviews. They should have just sent a rejection!
Cornell U
Dartmouth
Emory U
Florida SU *FSU ran an identical ad last year. a failed search? * I know one candidate turned them down.

U of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
UNC Greensboro
U of North Dakota *UND is looking for a senior scholar.
U of North Texas *not a failed search, but an additional t-t position because their junior faculty keep leaving because it's a really divisive department. (As far as I know, people are leaving/have to leave for perfectly legitimate reasons.) (I know for a fact that that's not true, unfortunately.) (Please be more concrete.)Beware this job! This statement keeps getting erased but it shouldn't be!) (Jeez, somebody really has an axe to grind. My rumor mill says this is a perfectly normal dept. Why dont you just give it a rest and let the interviewees decide for themselves on campus?) (Good point. I say let interviewees make their own choices too, but perhaps they should ask what happened to previous t-t people) (I asked around at MLA and it doesn't sound good at ALL.) (What's the deal with UNT doing video conference only interviews anyway? They didn't care enough to meet candidates in person at MLA? I think we get the message...)
U of Mo Kansas City
U of Oregon
U of Rochester * U of Rochester has two inside candidates in visiting positions, but t-t searches are legit.

Old Discussion

Just a note from somebody who has been doing this awhile:
-Many commented on the fact that acknowledgments of apps were sent AFTER candidates already invited to campus. Often these two things are handled by different offices - human resources sends acknowledgments, while the program hiring sends the rejections - this isn't necessarily a sign of complete disorganization.
-AA/EEO forms are not used to determine who is hired, but to determine who the ads have reached and who chose to apply for reporting purposes. I encourage you to submit those cards even if you already know you didn't get the job!
-True, it is quite inappropriate that many departments do not acknowledge apps (and some never even send rejection letters), but I'm afraid it is rather common; I thus don't know if it is a good idea to jump to conclusions about the department (as some do) based on this.
Thank you (sincerely) for the comments, but with all due respect, just because a practice is common doesn't make it acceptable. At minimum, it speaks well to the departments who take the time to notify candidates of their status, say, that they are not one of the candidates chosen for an on-campus interview. -I heartily concur with this sentiment. The mere fact that sites such as this one exist speaks ill of the hiring process in general. I hope we all remember what it is like to be in the applicant's shoes when, one day, we find ourselves sitting on search committees.

I think there are a lot of things that hiring committees should do differently. One of them should be some feedback on why you weren't hired, even though it might hurt. Of course sometimes the other candidate is simply better or the inside candidate was the choice anyway, but what can the other candidate do in order to improve? These are questions that every candidate should get an answer to.
In most cases, the candidate doesn't do anything "wrong" that could be improved. There are so many factors that play a role in hiring for a certain department school, that all they can say is that somebody else was a better "fit." And I think this is a good explanation and one that does not lead to extra axiety and self doubt. OK, I see your point, but I think theses search committees should try to use at least a tiny little bit of respectful behaviour towards their applicants. At least a rejection letter would be nice. And I think there are indeed some reasons that a committee should give you for not hiring you. You can only improve through criticsism.

New structure: By popular demand, there is a new category: schools that have scheduled initial interviews, post-MLA.

I noticed that the webaddress to this German wiki has the name "gebo" in it. "Gebo" is the Germanic rune indicating good fortune. (How appropriate!) I predict and hope that everyone using the German wiki is successful in their job search. Best of luck to all who visit here! Happy New Year!

I am concerned about disappearing entries. Is this the work of trolls or SCCs editing content? I no longer feel comfortable contributing to this site.

This site has been a valuable point of reference for me and I find it rather disconcerting to learn that entries have been disappearing. Thanks and kudos to whomever started this site. It's just too bad we can't all play fair.

Twice now info I have posted has been deleted...I'm a prof in the dept in question. Yes, my info keeps disappearing, too.-what on earth does anyone have to gain from deleting this kind of information?! Or am I naive.... [No, I think people are just "acting out," because the job market is not going well (not surprisingly, this is all occuring in the post-MLA season).]
Actually, I am not the person who posted where you are from, and i won't again, but before you claimed to be wronged: you can indeed tell what you have deleted and I can also say it wasn't just what you claimed. I know for a fact that you have deleted info on Williams. It is possible to check. So, the question is, why are you doing it?

Might I ask who you are and what gives you the right to delete any information? Repetitve or not?
I find it interesting that you haven't yet deleted your "inappropriate" comments yet felt the need to delete mine. I DON'T THINK THIS CONVERSATION IS INAPPROPRIATE IF THIS SITE IS TO WORK IN THE FUTURE.

There is only one "troll" that I can see from looking at the log and it's the same person deleting all our information repeatedly.
