WHO DELETED ALL THE COLONIAL SEARCH INFORMATION ?! IS THERE ANY WAY TO REVERT TO A PRIOR PAGE?

I've gone into the "History" and am pasting in the missing colonial info; it was deleted on Feb 23 and the info I'm putting back in is from the 22nd, so if you updated in the last 24 hours, check to see if it's there; and if you're the [deleted] who wiped this section out, you obviously don't understand how wikis work; anyone can restore wiped info by going into the history. I'll admit, I don't know how to fix the crossed-out sections. Whoever you are, why are you doing this?????
Someone keeps deleting all the information about accepted offers at Texas A&M and Florida State. If you are deleting this because you have contrary info, please state that info instead of just erasing it.

What's the deal with this job? Has the offer been accepted? Wasn't this the second year they ran this search? I'm virtually certain I applied for this position last year. Is there something wrong with this place? Who got the offer, anyways? Rumor is something is wrong with this place.
My experience last year seemed like a dept without a plan and less than professional; maybe that's still the case? For what it's worth, I interviewed there this year and did not sense any thing "wrong."

Hmm... Hmm, indeed, thanks for the report (2/5) If you got that letter, I'd take it as a good sign . . . I applied for this job and didn't get that letter from Jan. 30. They are interviewing on campus now.
I applied and never got an acknowledgement of my application letter. Did anyone receive one? Yes, but it appears, from responses posted here, that they were selective in responding. (3/6) Rejection letter received (3/10).
What did the rejection letter say? Did it say they had selected a few finalists? I noticed that the posting for the job said position is available pending budgetary approval. Did they get that approval? "while you are not one of the final candidates for this position..." that's all it said. Can't be of more help, sorry (3/12).

UC Santa Cruz- notice of AHA interview Dec. 1 on campus notification by phone Jan. 23 And, for some of us: a very complimentary rejection email on January 31st! (I'll give them credit for making rejects feel as though they got a thoughtful look and might have even been in it until recently! Beats the hell out of a few strange, thoughtless, semi-insulting ones I've gotten!) Are you on the search committee and undercover or something? These people were out to lunch and the email note is typical except that it's not even sent by anyone from the committee, but the department secretary again. The interviews were scheduled in 20 minute blocks.
Email note from secretary, who had also set up the 20 minute AHA interviews.

UNC Pembroke, Civil War and Reconstruction If anyone has forgotten how it feels to be treated as a human being, apply for one of these Pembroke jobs. These guys actually respect their fellow man/woman!!! Is this Stephen Berry's position? He is their CW faculty, but he doesn't seem to be teaching there this semester. It seems odd to advertsie this late if they knew he was leaving. Berry got the UGA job. Have phone interviews started for this position too or just the 19th/20th Century job? Setting up phone interviews for Thursday. Search suspended; will be renewed next year.

UNC Pembroke this is new (started Feb. 2) it's late 19th, early 20th Century.
There may be an inside candidate for this job. This person is presently an adjunct associate professor at UNC-P and specializes in this area. According to sources close to the search, this info is correct. _I thought this was Berry's position (see above)._ This news breaks my heart. If Berry is leaving, its not out of the realm of possibility that UNCP got the cash to replace him and add someone. They've gotten pretty aggressive at staking a larger part of NC and SC's college student base; especially since it has gotten tougher (over the last decade or so?) for in-state kids to get into UNC/NC State hence, more folks at UNCP, et al. There are definitely two different openings, and Berry definitely is not coming back. I'm not sure where he landed, but he was on leave (sabbatical?) this year. I find it hard to believe that UNC-P is becoming the school of choice for Chapel Hill/NC State rejects. Isn't it the lowest-ranked of the UNC campuses? Regardless of what you think its ranked within the UNC system: they are hiring, they recognize that they have a regional role to play and are looking for the best cadidates to fullfill that mission, they are growing, and the UNC system has been for some time filtered more in-state students away from UNC/NC State into the regional campuses in a general sense, so as to make room for academic superstars from out-of-state and from other nations. UNC-Asheville, UNC-Wilmington, the rest of the what, dozen or so, universities in the UNC system have, by and large, seen increasing enrollments (for a lot of different reasons)in the last twenty years. And by the way, it is disgusting that you refer to UNCP students as "rejects." I agree. I have no connection to the UNC system, but I found that word disturbing as well. Judging by what I have seen on the website and by how I have been treated by the chair of the search committee for the CW job, I'd rather be here than anywhere else I applied, including Gettysburg. Any news on this search? Has anyone heard from the SC since 3/15? Nothing 4/4 phone interviews have started4/5 friend of mine invited to campus on 4/13
Rejection letter received 4/20; ALERT: all incompetent SC's, please contact Prof. Mark Thompson, UNCP, for lessons on how to run a search efficiently and decently. Quick acknowledgment of receipt, quick decline. Simple and sweet. No bad feelings. Love that guy, and he didn't even want to interview me! It's the same with Dr. Robert Brown, the chair of the department and of the other Pembroke search committee. My general feeling is that this is a very warm and friendly department and would be a wonderful place to end up! See same position below.

Baker University phone interviews March

Baruch College (urban) AHA interview scheduled 12/13 campus visits scheduled 1/20i'm not sure this is right. were you called or emailed? During the AHA interview, they indicated that they would not invite candidates to campus until Fevruary, as Baruch is on a different semester system, and faculty members are not around in January to meet and make decisions. Has this changed? I guess so because they selected 4 candidates for on-campus interviews in Feb. so what's going on? have all the candidates visited? when will the committee makes its offer? any info?Offer made, 2/21
Offer accepted 3/16/07 Who got this job? Charlotte Brooks

Bethany any word? On Feb 7 and 8 candidates invited to campus campus visits by three people were mid and late February. As one who made a visit, let me say this: Bethany is no "College" at all. It is, at best, a pathetic residential high school where the faculty are woefully inept and the atmosphere is worthy of an intrepid anthropological researcher. Wow. Anyway, I wasn't on campus, but I did just get a three-sentence long form email rejection on April 11. That rejection email was a real class move too:
"Dear Applicant:
Thank you for you interest in the History position at Bethany College. After
carefully reviewing files and conducting interviews, we have filled the
position.
Again, I thank you for your application and wish you well.
Sincerely, blah, blah, blah..."

Binghamton Univ - SUNY (vap) Not a peep as of 6/11, not even AA card E-jection in late June.

Cambridge, UK (Multi-year mellon post-doc) - Rejection letter received, early February. Finalists submitted writing samples in mid-February. Supposedly they hear the final decision on March 23rd. Snail mail rejection received while I was at OAH.
No big surprise here: they just re-extended their current Mellon fellow by another year or two. A typical day at Cambridge U.

Carthage AHA interview request 12/18

Central Arkansas
AHA interview scheduled 12/11 campus invite extended 1/18 Interview done. Waiting for good news.

Central Florida (Florida History)4/23 - any news?

Chicago
AHA interview scheduled 12/13 (U.S. 20th C.) They just rejected me AGAIN. 2nd time this season! Rejection email received, 12/14 but it said due to the nature of our search, we will be keeping your application materials on file. Whatever to them.
For what it's worth, I have heard from the inside that in their searches, U of C does not even look at the materials of candidates who don't have big-name advisors. So much for meritocracy. There are happier places to be. Rumor from the AHA: UC ran more searches than they have lines; if senior Prof accepts offer, then junior US search is discontinued
rumor has it: she's from Princeton - christine stansell. somehow i doubt she'll go to chicago. Does that mean they offered a position to Wilentz as well? No
-announcement that Ramón A. Gutiérrez accepted offer, for which line I've lost track-not the same one as Stansell.
- Rumor has it that if Gutierrez accepts offer, the other two lines are closed. Apparently, this has been Chicago's intent since last fall.
-He already accepted and there are four more US history candidates coming to campus in the next couple weeks. I don't think the department would bother
to bring people if the other lines were closed, but who knows.
I don't know if we're all talking about the same lines here, but my understanding is that Stansell has taken the position and the junior 20th-c search is canceled. Stansell and Wilentz are divorced, I think. She's not in the acknowledgments of his new book, and it seems clear that she's trying to get out of Dodge, er, Princeton.
2/25: Chicago has invited two more senior candidates, Mark Bradley (US/Asia diplo) from Northwestern and Adam Green (Af-Am Cultural) from NYU.
This site is very valuable and important for the ways in which it disrupts the power dynamic between those who employ and those who are searching for employment. That being said, this is really not the place for people to ruminate on anyone's marital status. Beyond being totally crass and evasive, it runs counterproductive to the aims of this website, and could potentially turn people away who would otherwise be willing to offer valuable info on the job market-but dont in fear that they are adding grist to the rumor mill. I understand how hard it is to be on the market, but how does reading a senior person's
acknowledgements and then deducing that a couple is breaking up actually soothe the pain of not getting a job.
to the pompous peron who wrote the above: how do you know that the said poster wrote that info out of bitterness at not getting a job? maybe it was someone on the search committee? or someone at princeton who is unhappy at stansell's departure? the point is you don't know. if you deduce like this in your own work, YOU will probably never land a job.
I don't think the "peron" above is pompous at all. It's a good point - the wiki is great for alleviating our "what the hell is going on" feeling. But the random gossip feels petty, no matter what the impetus for posting it.
- The point about the marital status was material to the point made by the original poster. Without that information, most of us would not have believed that Stansell would leave Princeton (or leave without Wilentz). Both scenarios seemed improbable. But, the information about the divorce made sense of Stansell's move to Chicago. Perhaps the original poster should not have added the comments about getting out Dodge, but, I've been in this game long enough to know that gossip, unfortunately, is central. I don't like it and I try not to contribute to it, but I recognize that that's the way people are in this profession. On a more serious note, I think the greater problem here is that Chicago may have committed an ethical violation if it posted ads for junior faculty (does anyone remember the ads?) and then turned around and hired senior faculty. If this is the case, it should be reported to the AHA.
They were open-rank searches. You'll have to put your indignation in a holster for now.
- THIS ENTIRE CONVERSATION WOULD NOT BE TAKING PLACE IF CHICAGO (LIKE OTHER PLACES) WOULD SEND CLEAR INFORMATION TO CANDIDATES ABOUT THEIR SEARCH.
for the record, their search was "Rank open, with strong preference for assistant or beginning associate professor". I don't believe Gutierrez or Stansell are at the junior level, but I guess the SC can do what it wants.
- the funny thing, before they posted their search they circulated a self-important email among faculty at top schools asking them to informally recommend their best ABDs. So not only did they waste the ABDs' time and money, but also a lot of other people's.
- . . . which makes us all a bunch of tools! Despite this sentiment, I am one for finding ways to get the powers that be (the SC's) to adhere to what one poster below referred to as a set of "best practices." Not sure how this could be done (whether it's via the AHA or each institution) but something needs to change. I think this site is a beginning. While the information may not always be correct or clear, it's more than I ever got from the SC's and it's enabled me to get on with my life. Thanks.
As someone interviewed by Chicago at the AHA, I can say that I found the process pretty transparent and the SC very professional. They replied in a timely fashion about the search process. The only problem I had was the historiographic review essay they required, which took up a lot of time during the holidays when I would have preferred to spend time with my family. Asking a five page review of an entire field is not an easy task Chicago and if you don't think that you will be offering jobs to people, it is unfair.
- do you think they also asked Stansell for a review essay?
I DOUBT IT. I HADN'T KNOWN ABOUT THIS REQUIREMENT, IT SOUNDS PRETTY INCREDIBLE. THIS IS PROBABLY THE MOST SELF-ABSORBED SEARCH OF THE YEAR - NO EASY FEAT, THAT!
they were, however, one of the few to send a rejection letter before making offers, which is becoming pretty rare...
- Was the essay required of the candidates for all three lines or a particular line?
- I am pretty appalled by the essay requirement. WTF do they think we are, a bunch of pre-quals weenies? I am sure I would have done it as well, but I would have also loved to tell them to shove it. Then for them to hire a tenured prof who surely did not have to write such an essay..... People, please! First, it WAS advertised as an open-rank, multiple-position search. Second, the essay-requirement is goofy at any rank. If the essay-requirement is to remain a must (by some typically quixotic, eccentric, vaguely crazy U of C demand), they could clarify it to something more straightforward, like "what are a few of the major historiographical/theoretical/critical/archival questions/problems that your most recent major work (diss, book, whatev) set out to revise/dismantle/invent? What theories, methods, critical perspectives, were most useful in getting you to where you wanted to go with that work? Can you comment on how these might speak to broader issues in the field?" For all interviewees (especially junior folks), this would be an excellent exercise in any case, and good prep for any other interviews. Such a question would feel less like an open-ended field-exam question. Until conditions improve, WTF must remain the correct answer. Yes, you may count me among those who apparently gave the "wrong" answer to the essay-exam portion of the interview.
Quick thought: so, if asked to submit the essay, why not tell UC to fuck off (without the profanity of course; what I really mean is declining to submit the essay). The idea here is that if UC is really interested in your application they may offer some specific guidance, or, maybe even allow you to submit a diss./book intro. If the candidate isn't at the top of the list, that person probably isn't going to get there by writing up some silly historiographical essay for the SC. What about refusing to do anything unreasonable (official transcripts with intitial applications, etc.)? The idea isn't to create some kind of massive protest against the hiring process, but, instead, that the content of CVs probably decide the matter far more than anything else????
Stansell and Gutierrez hired

Christian Bros. [VAP] This job was advertised in the fall and did interviews at the AHA. THey are just now getting around to on-campus interviews. Would love to hear how those go. Offer made and accepted. I really feel sorry for this person, whomever it may be. Out of curiosity, why would you say that? Numerous reasons. Search chair was disorganized. Told applicants that they would only pay less than existing faculty made so pay started at 34K. Also, former dean of college and tenured prof. of history left to take a VISITING job at Rhodes College across town. The ship can't be right if you leave a tenure track for a VAP.

Columbia University (African American history) Three candidates have been invited to campus for mid- to late January.

Columbia University (African American history) Three candidates have been invited to campus for mid- to late January.
All talks done; committee report made and accepted by dept.

DePauw (VAP position): is this an iside job designed to keep Carl Weinberg there? They posted it last year, last fall for a spot this spring, and again this spring.
I am guessing it is not expressly for Carl. I would think they could renew Carl without a formal search (the ad for this position says "renewal possible..."). But you are right, they do seem to always be advertising this position.
Told via e-mail that applications were currently being considered. No mention of Carl Weinberg.
Told via e-mail that the position has been filled. No mention of Carl.

Drake U. (VAP) phone call 5/24 indicating short list made campus invite 5/25 offer accepted 6/12

Eastern Connecticut State University: Phone interview scheduled 12/12 Campus interview scheduled Rejection letter of April 4 states they hired no one and "hope" to renew the search next year. Another one bites the dust!

East Stroudsburg AHA interview scheduled AHA interview was a truly insane experience. The interview was dominated by an older woman who prided herself on 'not having even looked at a single candidate's materials' and constantly took over the discussion on bizarre and unrelated rants. To make matters much worse, the other three committee members clearly hated her and every time she spoke they audibly told her 'to shut up', rolled their eyes, covered their faces, and looked at each in apparent agony. Was this interview for the position in African American history? I had the same interview, but had a much better experience. They were all very nice and collegial during my morning interview. Was yours late in the day, when they were probably tired? They did seem to be doing a marathon of interviews - someone was coming in right after me, so that makes two per hour, at least Saturday morning. Was your interview prearranged or from c.v. collection? I had a similar strange experience. The two younger faculty seemed nice, but the two older faculty were, well, odd and confrontational
Any up date of East Stroudsburg, did anyone get invited to an on campus interview after the initial telephone interview or AHA interview? Yes, invited for campus visit.

Emerson College (American Political/Dept. of Journalism)
What is this position? Is it for 2007-2008? Where was the ad? Are they still accepting applications?
I applied for this job in 2005-2006 and was rejected in June 1, 2006. Was an offer made last year or was no offer made and they reposted the exact same job? What's up with this year's search?

Franklin College Acknowledgement 1/4/07 Asked where I saw position posted by HR Department 2/14. HR person did not know details on search. Their deadline isn't until March. Calm down, people. American Studies Wiki alleges that this job has an "inside candidate"
inside candidate remark sounds logical, since the ad has mysteriously disappeared from the Chronicle website (and was never posted on H-Net).I did a phone interview with these folks at the end of February. E-mailed chair a few weeks later to ask where things stood and was told that the search was "ongoing." The chair could at least have had the decency to explain that I'd not been selected for a campus visit. Oh, well.
Rejection letter received mid-May appointment made (name undisclosed).

Frostburg State AHA Interviews scheduled Has anyone heard about this job? They have conducted campus interviews.Knew a fellow who sent an e-mail asking about the search, heard nothing. If post about "campus visits" are accurate it would be nice, not to mention professional, to inform those interviewed at the AHA Who got the job? Heard a rumor 3/28 that the funding fell through - no hire Sarcastic tone: ON. Well, thanks for keeping us informed on that one, Frostburg State. Good to know that you value we candidates so highly.Offer made and accepted Who? I still haven't heard anything from this SC, 4 months after interviewing. I'm curious too. The interview was extremely rushed (even for the AHA) and they didn't seem too interested. I was going to call inside candidate, but of course I have no way of knowing if they have an alum out there floating around with a Ph.D. or not.Color me crazy, but do I recall that their original letter acknowledging applications said something notably weird, something to the effect of 'b/c of the great # of apps, we won't be able to communicate further w/ any other than those candidates advancing in the search.' I sort of remember thinking Frostburg was screwy at the time. Job offered and accepted. Hired Gregory Wood, 2006 PhD U Pittsburg. Had been at PSU-Erie

Gannon University, Erie, PA any news here? deadline was in March... Rec. HR material today, 4/47 I meant 4/27. But it feels like 47.

George Mason U/Center for New Technology (postdoc) Phone interview requested 4/9 phone interview 4/23; told would be making decisions in next two weeks or so
Did everyone who got a phone interview get contacted a while ago, or are teh invitations coming in on a rolling basis?
Do they seem to be interpreting history of science criteria broadly, or are y'all all pretty solidly in that field? My impression was that at least two of us were contacted on 4/8 or 4/9, and they did all the phone interviews in a group last week; I could be wrong. They're looking for someone to work primarily on a project on the history of open-source software, along with more general work on other projects etc. offer made 5/8

Harvard finalist candidates invited to campus Rejection letters sent out were these rejection letters to the finalists who had been invited to campus, or to all the original applicants? Does anyone know if an offer has been made in this search, as of 1/26? I don't think so. I know someone they are flying out in early Feb. - in house rumor on campus: this has been declared a failed search.
Is that the official word too here? Yes, search committee divided; second round of candidates brought to campus before making offer to round one candidate (March).

QUESTION: Who were the interviewERS at the AHA?
Answer: There were no AHA interviews. Finalists were brought directly to campus.
THANK YOU FOR THE ANSWER ABOUT THE AHA.
LAST QUESTION, I THINK: When (what date?) were people CALLED or were they EMAILED for on-campus interviews and when did they visit campus?

Did only a handful of folks apply for this? See below comment on Farmington that says only a handful of people applied.
Offer made late March to assistant prof from another Ivy, pending.

I can't speak to how many people applied, but the search was jointly run by the history dept and the committee on degrees in social science, which would have the successful candidate teaching US history courses and a theory course.

Would you be willing to name who was on the search committee. who served from the history dept and who served from the committee on degrees in social science?
Also, how many people made the shortlist?
Has an offer been made?
Thank you. Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

Round one candidate declined; round two candidate accepted. Five candidates to campus; no idea about the shortlist. Committee = Peter Gordon (History, chair), Sven Beckert (History), Richard Tuck (Govt/SS), Kimberly DaCosta (AAAS/SS).
So whom did Harvard hire in the end (i.e. who was the second-round candidate who accepted)?
Andrew Jewett, UC Berkeley Ph.D., 2002

Huntingdon- Offer made (2/23)

Huron University College (ON) - Received letter 2/5 that said they had 100+ applications and enough of them were from Canadians that they would likely not hire American candidate

Indiana U (Asian Am history) campus interviews scheduled 1/11 Offer made

Johns Hopkins Take with a large grain of salt, but I heard a rumor of a long short list while at AHA
Couldn't they at least acknowledge receipt of application?? there was more info here last week - is this search over?
Ans: Hopkins history community has been told that finalists are scheduled to visit campus for Feb. and March. Some names and paper titles have been broadcast. Cannot say for sure that every invitation has been made, but I assume this is so.
**Pincus should get this job. He's really great.** I'm guessing you are joking, but wanted to clarify that Pincus is not up for this job. He was invited to give a talk as part of the normal Seminar.
two finalists, Sarah Igo (Penn) and Jennifer Klein (Yale), both advanced assistant profs Pincus forever. He deserves consideration for that job!Received rejection letter via snail mail, 3/7
Offer to Igo declined.

Kean (Assistant professor, political and social history, posted H-Net 12.08.06) AA form rcvd 1/19
Kean (American History and related European, Ocean County College campus in Toms River, NJ posted H-Net 01.19.07)
Has anyone heard anything about the timeline for this posting? The deadline for the position was end of Jan, I was curious to know if anyne had been connected either in a positive or negative way? The search just seems slow to get going.
Received rejection letter for one of the positions 5/3. I applied for both positions, and the letter did not indicate which one it was for.

Keuka College heard nothing from start to finish, not even the courtesy to acknowledge my app

Kenyon AHA interview scheduled Anyone hear about campus interviews, yet? I haven't as of 1/25: anyone else? Nope. Yes - campus interview scheduled shortly after the AHA Rejection letter received 2/2 (after AHA interview)
Q: Has an offer been made? I heard yes. A2: This was an inside job, spousal hire. **Somehow that makes the fact
that the AHA interviewers were so incredibly rude & unpleasant just that much
worse. I went through being treated that way and there was never even a shot?
This is just SHAMEFUL. I spent $800 of my own money (not reimbursed by anybody) to interview with Kenyon at AHA. This is just WRONG. For the record, the interviewers were not rude in the least to me; but I could tell that something was "up" with the interview b/c it was just all too mild and "pleasant" (no particularly hard questions, etc.) This outlay was something my family could ill afford at the time. BUT BECAUSE IT WAS KENYON, we borrowed (credit card) for me to attend AHA. I hope that I am leading a rousing virtual cheer when I say, KUCK FENYON!!!
WHY WAS MY COMMENT ERASED FROM THIS SECTION? IT MAKES ME WONDER ABOUT THE WHOLE PAGE. WHO IS POSTING INFO, WHO IS DELETING IT, AND WHY?
How about taking some responsibility yourself? If it was such a serious burden for your family, you could have at least asked about the possibility of a phone interview. If they were not accommodating or forthcoming about the inside candidate after hearing about your financial concerns, then I say you are justified. However, you did not explore every option and yet you want to put all the blame on the department.
With all due respect, that is a bunch of junk. If you have over 100 applications and you schedule 12 for interviews, it is just as easy to drop this person and go to the next person down.
Whoever wrote this previous comment about 'responsibility', why do I suspect you have a job? It's not easy to ask for special accom. that might jeopardize your chances of being considered. And personally, I would like to think
that this page is there partly for information, partly to be supportive of one another, and, yes, partly to vent. Kenyon, having done over so many people this year, can handle being yelled at on a grad student wiki. I would have thought
this was a place where we recognized that the power is all on the dept's side, so why should all the responsibility be on us? And why not just say, hey, $800? Yeah, that sucks; our sympathies.

I suspect I am coming to this discussion quite late. However, I want to share my experience from both sides of the search process (and, yes, I have a job). When I was first on the market I asked a number of schools to conduct phone interviews because I was expecting. Every place made arrangements to interview me over the phone rather than at the AHA. I have also been on a committee where a similar request was made at the last minute because of an illness. In that case, one of my colleagues interviewed the candidate over the telephone. While venting is fine (I encourage it given the state of academia), also recognize that there are alternative ways of dealing with this situation.

La Salle
Rejection letter 4/10

Lakeland
Rejection Letter 12/24 I heard that a candidate accepted 2/22. This was an inside job. If this is Lakeland College in Wisconsin, then no, it was not an inside job.

Luther College [VAP] has anyone been contacted for an OAH interview yet? Grapevine tells me they've been calling refrences early this week.

Maryville College
any word? the deadline was ages ago... See above under 19th, I think it's the same job. Offer made/accepted. Northwestern Ph.D.

Middlebury College Has anyone heard anything about the Middlebury one-year?
They did AHA interviews; I talked to someone who had one On-campus interview late-Jan. Snail mail rejection letter received (after AHA interview) 2/13. Letter said two candidates invited to campus. Offer made & accepted

North Carolina School of the Arts Social Sciences/History
Anybody know what happened with this?

Northern Kentucky Campus interview scheduled 1/22.

Northern Colorado (non-tenure track) AHA interview scheduled 12/8 Rejection letter (saying I am not a finalist) rec'd 2/23. Candidate accepted offer.

NYU requested materials 12/15, not doing AHA interviews this year - APPARENTLY still deciding on a shortlist of finalists to be invited to campus - still deciding? A friend tells me they've selected candidates for on-campus interviews.
Did anyone get an acknowledgement of application letter? I didn't. I called and the AA said she sent me one, but I never got it.
Rumor that they are bringing/brought in four candidates, three IR/diplomatic, one US southwest, environmental
There are only RUMORS about this pompous search. Wouldn't it be nice if they simply let people know what's going on, or perhaps even - gasp - send an acknowledgment of receipt?
their claims about the AA form are BS. No one I know got one.
It's not a rumor. I know a few of the candidates giving talks at NYU this year.
May I just say that I find the information on the subfields of the candidates particularly helpful. I do not need to know the finalists' ranks, or the schools from which they come, but knowing their subfields *is* helpful because it gives one a sense of what the search comittee is looking for. And "fit," as we all know, is one of the most important variables in this overdetermined process.
THEY WENT WITH THE SOUTHWEST GUY Q: Who is he? A: Andrew Needham Ph.D. Michigan

Oklahoma State Univ. - VAP position - will begin looking at files 4/16 Anyone else waiting to hear? 5/8 no word. Had a phone interview on 4/25, and was told I would hear something the following week. Not a peep so far - I'm assuming the worst Looks like an inside job - I got a letter May 9th that said they hired Scott Rohrer, a Northwestern PhD from '06. The department website has him listed as a VAP for 2006-7.

Pacific U AHA interview scheduled 12/17 after an enquiry by me, I've heard they have decided finalists, but I'm not one of them.
Received nice hand-written rejection note from the chair. No mention of who got the job. Rejection letter of the regular, form variety received 3/9 **offer accepted by Lisa Szefel

Purdue University (Latina/o History)Rejection Letter Received 12/11 Offer made to candidate in mid-Feb; candidate rejected, and search called off. Anyone know who that candidate was?Yes, Elizabeth Escobedo.

Penn State-York email 12-10, no AHA, request more info on teaching shouldn't this be in the 19th century section, or are there 2 openings here? Website says they're at the campus interview stage. Guy running search is not polite.I found him very rude as well. Who got the darn job?
4/23 don't know. enjoyed my late on-campus and sent a note to person running search, he's not technically the chair but someone who cannot delegate, and haven't gotten a reply
Quincy phone interview scheduled mid-Feb

Spring Hill College In negotiation with candidate Priest told me to my face that I'd get invited to campus. The man of the cloth lied. I don't think they managed this serach very well. Has anyone heard who got the job with these wonderful colleagues? According to schedule of courses, have hired "T Ward." Thomas Ward from Rockhurst maybe? Makes sense - Rockhurst is Jesuit, like Spring Hill, and his online c.v. says he was an adjunct at Spring Hill in 2001 and also taught school in Mobile. A semi-inside candidate, I guess. He's a good fit for them, actually... Be that as it may, they still shouldn't have made everyone who interviewed believe that they were coming to campus. What, you too?

Richard Stockton AHA Interview scheduled 12/15 On campus interviews scheduled 01/15/07 Rejection letter received 3/8

Rowan Anyone know the timeline on this one?
ANYTHING from Rowan? Word up Rowan?

Tufts (One-Year Lecturer):What is this? Does anyone know? Is there an ad somewhere? It's a one year replacement job in 20th c. US with an international/diplomatic emphasis. Offer has been made & has been accepted.

Univ. of South Alabama (VAP) 3/29: email from SC asking if I was still interested in position. After telling them yes, received another email regarding availibility for phone interviews. It was unclear as to whether they had actually made their short list, or whether they were just checking back with a semi-short list of people before making a final cut down to the interview pool. by July still no rejection or answer to my query

Univ. of Colorado-Denver Phone interviews held 12/11, 12/12 On-campus scheduled preXmas
Offer made. I JUST GOT AN E-MAIL TODAY (2/20) SAYING THEY WERE BEGINNING REVIEWS OF MATERIAL AND WOULD BE SCHEDULING INTERVIEWS SHORTLY. ANYONE ELSE HEARD THIS? DID THE PERSON DECLINE THE OFFER?
I got same email. Is this for HSU? Make that three mysterious emails received. Maybe they just want the Affirmative Action info and screwed up in not getting it before? I just got an email apology for the 2/20 email asking for AA information; the 2nd email said that the search was closed, and then it AGAIN asked for AA information. Just bite me. Bite me two. Make it three:)Thomas Andrews from Cal-Northridge has accepted this position.

University of Maine, Farmington
Q: Has anyone heard anything? Anything about AHA interviews?
A: I got an acknowledgement letter on Dec. 21 saying they would be scheduling AHA interviews, but I've heard nothing since.
A: Also got an acknowledgement letter saying the same thing; wonder if they are still going to AHA?
A: Just noticed that they have a table scheduled at the AHA Job Registry for thurs, fri, sat and sun-so either
they are interviewing everyone in the world but us, or they blocked out a ton of time at the Registry because they knew
they would be trying to schedule last minute interviews, or at least those are my conspiracy theories.
A: Thanks. Was trying to find out how to look at the Job Registry to find that out. Wonder if they could have
cancelled the AHA, but because of delays in updating information they are still listed?

Q: Any news about AHA or other interviews?
A: I heard they interviewed about 25 people at the AHA
just got a polite rejection letter 1/16; they said they had "over 260 applications" (!)
Anyone know who the lucky one chosen from the 260 person applicant pool was?
Were their really 260 people who applied for this job? Harvard had only a handful of people apply for its 19th century position. What is so incredible about Farmington? It probably seems somehow more realistic to most people. I mean, after all, how many people can really think they have a chance at Harvard? Where would you have to graduate from to get a job at Harvard?

Did you mean 20th century position at Harvard? And did only a handful of people apply?

University of Maryland (associate prof position). Has anyone heard anything? MD plans to bring candidates, but moving om Latin america and medieval searches first

UNC-Charlotte (African American/women and gender history) AHA interview scheduled Offer Made

Univ. of Montana - Western (1 yr) Letter stating immediate review of apps beginning. Rejection by email late June

*UNC-Pembroke (late 19th/early 20th): good SC chair who is an actual human being. Should be a flurry of activity after the 3/15 closing date, no? Considering they are running two searches.
There may be an inside candidate for this job. This person is presently an adjunct associate professor at UNC-P and specializes in this area.If it is who it looks like it is, glad to see the UNC system still sees its non-Chapel Hill schools as colonial holdings that support the big boys. (sarcasm intended, of course) Well, did suspicions bear out? - was inside candidate hired? No. Offer made and accepted. Ryan Anderson, Purdue Ph.D 2006

Univ of Utah (VAP) 6-8 request for phone interview 1st choice accepted other offer 6/12

U. of Victoria Rejection letter received (in contiguous U.S.) on 12/15

Williams College, Two-year visiting position, starting fall 2007
apps due 3-30-07, confirmation card received
any word on the timeline? A: Search should conclude in early May
Q: So, have initial interviewees already been chosen?
Q: Does anyone have an update on this search? Is it closed?
well, I just got my AA card in the mail, if that's any help.
QUESTION: I got the AA card in the mail, too.
I'm white. I don't tend to send the cards in. Does sending the card or not affect one's chances one way or the other if one is white?
A: I don't think the departments track these, or are allowed to. I also got my AA card from Williams, but I have to believe that they've already chosen finalists, as the deadline was a month ago (I haven't heard anything). So it probably doesn't matter either way.
anyone heard a word about this search?
offer made and accepted

Worcester State
received letter 12/12 that search has been "discontinued" confirmed with WSC Human Resources that the "retirement plans" of the outgoing faculty member had changed and the search was discontinued. Nice! May I have my $20 for _original_ transcripts back?
(12/18) Yeah, when you get your $20 back, can you ask for my $10 too, and then for the ballpark-estimate $1,500 (imagine 150 applicants at an average of $10/pop) transferred from the pockets of graduate students and contingent faculty into the coffers of their respective institutions? What a pointless waste. How hard is it to write a job ad that says, "unofficial transcripts requested, official transcripts to follow for short-listed applicants"?

US & World

American Has anyone heard anything about American? This was the earliest application deadline of the bunch so I'm getting really curious about whether they are even going thru with the position. I THINK THIS IS AN INSIDE CANDIDATE SITUATION.
Candidates brought to campus, no AHA interviews.
*Emailed to say search over officially on 2/16-Hired Dr. Max Paul Friedman, who "will join American University's faculty as Associate Professor of History specializing in U.S. Foreign Relations in Fall 2007."
This is yet another instance of a rumored "inside candidate" that turns out to be false. People should not speculate without any real evidence to back it up.

(School of) Art Institute of Chicago; "American History"; anyone heard anything?
phone interview set up 2/7
ok, someone put me out of my misery; has anyone already phone-interviewed for this, too; i.e. have others also heard from SAIC already, and am i really out of the running?
They did phone interviews on 2/17 and said they would be making a decision about campus visits about 10 days afterwards. They have invited 3 people for March visits to campus.
E-mail indicating position had been filled received on 4/2. No mention of who got the job.
Hmmm . . . classy stuff; the website has now posted that the position is filled; hmm. . . before I received any correspondence personally. That's classy stuff.

Massachusetts College of Art - has anyone heard anything??

Pratt -
any news on this one? the ad was very vague...pretty much any one in any field could apply. A quick word on Pratt: they're not very well organized. The department is basically an unfunded service department. There is little teaching outside of the required core classes, and the pay is very low. Please strike or delete if this is inappropriate, but I felt the need to share.
I live very close to Pratt and know people who have and are teaching there. This is at least the third time in the past few years they've posted for this job. The people are quite nice bnut the place is very poor and very poorly run. This job is probably a booby prize.; THANKS...I appreciate the info.
Hey, the Europe page says that they just scheduled AHA interviews, I'm pretty sure it was for the same generic job add; any Americanists w/ an interview?

UC-SD -
materials requested - does anyone know if they will do the AHA? no AHA
I just received an e-mail telling me that they are not holding interviews at the AHA and that they would contact me by the middle of January -

And the four finalists are: one assoc. prof and three ABDs.

AHA interview scheduled scheduled on 12/8 1/22/07 cut has been made; called personally to tell me; these are the classiest interviewers ever they really are. I interviewed there last year and they are so fair and honest, why everyone cannot be this way is beyond me. Yeah, they called and rejected me, but very sweetly. Oh well.
Personally, I'd rather receive a generic email. Who wants to have that conversation? I find it interesting that we are so grateful to get some kind of communication that even a rejection can cause us to gush.
I agree that we do seem like the happiest losers ever but the point (at least my own) is that there really isn't any excuse for the way that search committees typically behave. There's no such thing as being "too busy" to be polite and/or kind.

General Rants: Vent Your Spleen

I just wanted to say that if anyone feels that they've been treated unfairly by a search committee or that a search has been conducted inappropriately, I think that it may be worthwhile to complain not to the AHA but to the respective Dean and top administrators of the school. I doubt that the AHA could pull any weight with these institutions, but I think that if we spoke as prospective employees, former alumni, and future (if not current) parents of college students, we could help draw the attention of the institution to a problem that they might be able to address. Some of the things described above just wouldn't be tolerated in a non-academic context (this is based on my work experience outside the discipline); I don't see why we should tolerate these shenanigans within academe.

Is it me, or does it seem incredibly rude for programs to wait this long before telling people if they are going to be interviewed at the AHA? I don't have any interviews scheduled yet, so I don't know if I should make travel arrangements. And I'm worried the price of tickets will go way up if I wait too long.
Yes, but I've heard of one person being called on New Year's Eve. Really. That's expensive...
I am in exactly the same boat. How long is it safe to wait?

I am also in this situation. You can get called up to the week of the convention. They assume that if you're on the market you will be there anyway. It sucks but that is the logic of the market!

It's not ideal, but it isn't rude. The semester's just ending for many committees so they're only able to meet now. The above poster is right; you have to suck it up and buy a ticket on the assumption that you'll get an interview. Try to get one that you can change for a fee, and if you don't have to go to Atlanta, change dates and times for some other occasion...

Agree with above writers, have no interviews yet but already bought ticket. But I've also scheduled meetings with publishers, so the trip won't be totally wasted. It's a great opportunity to meet with editors if you don't already have a book contract.

It's the uncertainty that drives me insane. Should I spend my holiday prepping for interviews I might or might not have? Should I go somewhere for New Year's or should I save my pennies to get to Atlanta? Should I go ahead and make plans to be in the archives in January? I understand the committees are all overworked and doing the best that they can, but this is excruciating.

Why did I ever go into this? I should have gone to law school! 200 applications for each job, only a few nineteenth-century jobs I'm even remotely in the ball park for, and a baby on the way! Ack!

Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence. I strongly disagree with the post that advised it is necessary to just "suck it up." Departments do searches infrequently. Searches are a central and important activity for a department. If they can not conduct those searches with a modicum of professional courtesy to candidates, many of whom they know are in straitened financial circumstances, that tells you something about how the place treats its faculty members and how those faculty members feel licensed to treat others.
Relax- not everybody's getting 200 apps. Somebody has to get these jobs and unless you're completely incompetent you'll land somewhere sooner or later. But, WHAT IS TAKING SOME OF THESE PLACES SO LONG TO CONTACT PEOPLE??!!?? :-)

Question: If you were asked to schedule an interview a few days after someone here posted the fact that they too had an interview, does that mean you are on the bottom of their list?

Well, yes, but be reasonable. Obviously it's a call list. The secretary doesn't hand the Chair a list in ranked order. At most of places it's probably a manilla folder or acordion binder with the files stuffed in randomly. They may even have tried to call you two days ago. Some people won't leave a message on these things, understandably, but prefer to wait until they get the person live.

A2: also keep in mind that the committee is trying to whittle down a large group of equally-qualified candidates. There may be one or two "stand-outs," but at this stage most committees will not take the time to rank the candidates (after all, that's the whole purpose of the interview!).
A3: i'm on a search committee and we are instructed to NOT rank the candidates. the chair of my dept insists on making the calls himself, and he is a flake. don't go into the interview feeling bad because you got called later than someone else.

What I want to know is, what is up with these early offers? It's clear that the institutions benefit, but it really screws with the candidate who then doesn't get to pursue

Agreed. Who would be the proper person at the AHA with whom to express these concerns? Pre-empting the AHA schedule is coercive and produces ill-will.

Indeed it does. Call the AHA, don't e-mail, and ask to speak to the attorney. She collects complaints and takes them to the governing body.

As far as I am concerned, if there is any way to get it over with before the hell of the AHA, then I am all for it. But I do understand those who get multiple offers not liking the system. Me, I'll take an offer
I don't think speaking with the attorney is the best way to address this problem. Pre-empting the AHA is not illegal. It's just counter to the logic of having a big annual convention that serves as a job market clearinghouse.
Sorry if I have trouble sympathizing with the plight of those who have multiple offers.
No need to apologize for that but anyone ought to have some interest in the integrity of the profession.
What I have a big problem with is the *candidates* for these jobs who accept and then stay on the market and interview. I understand the urge to grab a job but often once you drop the early offer job, they don't search again this year and the rest of us are knocked out of a second-chance offer and you take on-campus interviews that someone else should get. Your right to do as you like but I think it is unethical. If you accept a job in November, then get off the market!

I respectfully disagree. If SCs have the prerogative to explore all their options, then so do candidates. In the current situation, I don't think candidates' behavior in this regard should be scrutinized. The SCs have all the advantages. Classic case of blaming the victim.
Candidates' behavior not only can but will be scrutinized. Anyone who accepts a job before the AHA and then goes to interviews at the AHA is acting unethically. That is why it is so questionable for committees to ask for a commitment before the AHA. If you accept, you accept. You can always break the contract, but people will take note.
On the other hand, I applaud any SC that avoids the humiliating meat market that is the AHA.

The AHA needs to do something about this. People with job security shouldn't feel that they have the right to treat others like cattle.
Not sure if it is true, but I heard that the MLA got involved in the past couple of years when universities started making offers outside of the MLA timetable. The MLA, apparently, has set guidelines for conducting job-searches that include time-tables. I am not sure if the AHA has the same thing.

Some of the above posters have seemingly let strains of the job search cloud their better judgment. Scheduling interviews or making job offers before the AHA is not coercive, nor is it unfair. Likewise it does not harm "the integrity of the profession" if someone gets offered a job in December rather than February. Institutions can run their searches on their own timetables, and the AHA has no say in the matter. If you still feel somehow mistreated, you are free to simply reject any job offers you receive before the AHA.
I am one of those posters who finds pre-empting the AHA sch

My institution simply cannot afford to do AHA intervews and we don't feel obligated to wait for those who can. We advertise at the start of the fall and try to get an offer to our top candidate sometime between November and January. Until reading this board I did not even realize that anyone finds this controversial.

AHA interviews are not normative or some kind of gold standard for hiring professionally. I think it is only a minority of schools that do the AHA as part of their hiring process. The rest of us try to fit the demands of running a search committee around the schedule of the department and committee members. We are not hiring to fill your needs, we are hiring to fill ours.

This wiki has been very useful and hope this gains popularity and remains functional. I still don't have a job, but 1) I'm not waiting for calls and 2) I feel like I know more about the process and see this as a collective experience. It ain't pretty.
