Organ Quest
Quest to play the old pipe organ in Pilgrim's Rest
ID Name Examine Location
organ583 an old pipe organ Of modest dimensions, the old organ has been lovingly maintained by the Grey Friars. The banks of pipes glint in the cold chapel light and its dark wood exudes a rich scent of wax. The urbane visitor, familiar with grander and more elaborate constructions, might well pass it by but there is something engaging in its simplicity and in the manner it has been cherished that causes you to pause and to wonder what it would be like to play. A worn songbook rests upon the stool. Chapel Pilgrim's Rest

The words 'Property of Brother Sebastian' have been scrawled on the yellowing title page. An accomplished organist, Brother Sebastian was given to producing performances of such power and intensity as to delight the congregation and provoke many a pilgrim to speculate that his talent was divinely inspired. Alas, in later years, failing sight and memory led to abrupt silences during the service until the Abbot's furious humming jogged the ageing musician's faculties, much to the stifled amusement of the younger friars. not necessary to quest examine songbook

As you play the key, the organ emits a pure joyous note encouraging you on. As the last note resounds about the chapel, you feel an odd tingling in your finger tips, quickly spreading along your arms. Instinctively you seek to pull back but too late! Your body is paralysed by an alien exhilarating force coursing through you, dominating your will and rendering you helpless. It is a warm giddying power, coaxing your feet to the pedals and your fingers once more to the keys. And abandoning yourself to the movement, you let your conscious slide away, lost in the rhythm, in harmony with it all. And unafraid, unrestrained, you play. A spectator within your own body, you watch your blurred hands move across the organ with a speed and surety you never could have imagined. The pipes thrill to your touch, sending a swirling vibrant sound out the chapel doors, out the monastery gates to dance on the cobbled streets. Caught in the melody, in the ecstasy, you play on with the sweat pouring from your brow. You feel a warm light envelop your surroundings and pale figures in the pews sighing with delight. Your body contorts to every dazzling sequence. Hands which would ache could you feel them conjure astounding improvisations and you grow conscious of another presence, feel him beside you as the music reaches its crescendo, a hooded figure, a liberated soul laughing within you. And together you play, head shaking, hair flying, sending that last exultant chord exploding into the sky. From the vacant pews, the shadows shout their praise. A frozen moment as the music dies and then a sickening wrenching sensation as the spirit leaves you to collapse panting against the organ. Eyes closed and breathing hard, you do not see the shimmering aperture appear in the air above you nor the glittering cascade of gold falling about you but you hear the coins clattering across the chapel floor and from somewhere a soft old voice whispering his thanks. In the distance you hear an organist's breathtaking climax followed by rapturous applause. "Beautifully played," resonates a distant but clear voice. "Just as I might once have keyed myself."
