The astrology of Ancient India is based upon sidereal calculations. The sidereal astronomy is based upon the stars and the sidereal period is the time that it takes the object to make one full orbit around the Sun, relative to the stars. This is considered to be an object's true orbital period.
The astronomical tradition dates from the earliest of scriptures and has been continuously studied by many sages (including sages such as Aryabhata and Bhaskara) and been sponsored by many different Hindu kings. It has also been outlined in scriptures such as the Rig Veda and the Surya Siddhanta. Astronomical events are mentioned in almost every scripture.
