Since some people may not be familiar with how to use Wiki Technology, I thought I would write a basic plain-english tutorial.
Definition of Wiki from
webopedia.com.A collaborative Web site comprises the perpetual collective work of many authors. Similar to a blog in structure and logic, a wiki allows anyone to edit, delete or modify content that has been placed on the Web site using a browser interface, including the work of previous authors. In contrast, a blog, typically authored by an individual, does not allow visitors to change the original posted material, only add comments to the original content.
The term wiki refers to either the Web site or the software used to create the site. Wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian. The first wiki was created by Ward Cunnigham in 1995.
The content of wiki-site's like
Wikipedia doesn't come from a single source. Rather, the articles and information on the site is contributed by thousands, even millions of people. The advantage to the wiki method, rather than a simple website with one or a few authors, is that anyone and everyone can contribute to the site. Just think for a minute, who would do a better job describing your characters: me or you? Obviously you would do a better job. If everyone contributes information as needed, then this page will become a good resource while posting or brainstorming new ideas. It will also make this information more easily accessable rather than wading through posts or the files section to figure out who "Character A" is.
This also allows us to discuss ideas through the back and forth editing of discussion pages alongside the articles themselves.
This is a section of questions that have come up or I have anticipated coming up. If you have a question, please email me or write it onto the discussion section of this page.
Make sure you have created a login and are logged in before editing pages!!! It makes it easier to discuss things when we know who wrote what.
Official Wiki ManualBefore you post, you need to have some idea of how formatting on the site works (I'll go into more detail later).
Basically, everything about how these pages appear when viewed is controlled by a "markup language" similar to HTML. For your convenience, this site offers you a reference guide in the right column while you are editing a page.
Information can be added in the following ways:
- When viewing a page, if you see a word you want to define or write an article on, simply edit the page and add [ [ brackets ] ] on either side. Save the page, then view it. Click on the link (which will be red if there is no article behind it), and click the edit link. Then you can type in whatever information you wish to contribute. Try to keep your information organized.
- If you are reading a page and you think there is more information which could be added, go ahead and edit the page. If you mess up the page, we can always revert it to a previous version of that page.
Unfortunately, this site does not offer photo hosting. So first you need to download a copy of the photo you want to put up.
Second, you need to go to a free image hosting site like
ImageHosting.com or
ImageShack and upload a copy of your file.Third, copy the link that they give you. Then go to the page you want to put the link on.
Finally, edit that page and type { { img-URL|100x100 } } (without the spaces) except instead of img-URL paste the link to your photo, and instead of 100x100 you can use any size from 200x200 to 80x80. Work with it so that it looks good and the picture isn't stretched out or shrunken so far that you can't see it.
If you forget this, you can always check the syntax reference in the right column of the editor.
My spelling is really bad, how can I check my spelling while I edit?
- You can
Mozilla Firefox and add a dictionary. Then you can spellcheck right from your browser!
- Or you can copy your text into a word processor like MS Word or
GoogleDocs and check it there before copying it back into the edit window.
Just make sure you don't accidentally paste the same information several times!
